Former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur has strongly condemned the decision of HP government to curtail the extent of Sardar Patel University (SPU) Mandi .

In a press statement the former CM said, “This is a very unfortunate decision and fraught with ill will; the state government cannot open a new university but is allegedly conspiring to close down the University opened by the previous BJP government.”

He said, “The decision of the state government to exclude colleges of Chamba and Kangra districts, besides Ani and Nirmand from the SPU is a betrayal with the people and students of these areas.”

“ The previous government had brought  these colleges under the purview of SPU to save the students from travelling long distances to reach HPU Shimla but the students will have to suffer once again due to this undesirable decision as the state government is working with malice and trying to close down institutions opened during our regime,” he added.

Thakur also warned the state government to take this decision back or be ready to face agitation.

  1. Just opening a higher education institution is not enough, if state-of-art infrastructure is not created to support academic and research. SPU is just a newly born University. It needs lot of support to cater to a larger students affiliation, and also to reach a decent academic level. What about bringing down the standards of Himachal Pradesh University to the below 200 NIRF rank by the successive state governments? No one is agitating to fix responsibility for that and suggest a path forward to redeem its lost academy and research level.
