The Himachal Pradesh government has put a ban on the use of 500 ml polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottled water in the state to check plastic pollution in the state.
In a notification issued by the Director of Environment, Science and Technology, the use of 500 ml plastic bottled water in all official meetings, conferences and events organised by the government departments, boards , corporations and other institutions will be banned.
As per the notification issued under sub-section (1) of Section 3-A of the Himachal Pradesh Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act-1995, the rampant use of 500 ml PPT water bottles, from June 1, 2025, would be banned in the state , it being a serious threat to the environment.
Director of Environment, Science and Technology, D.C. Rana, said , “ This prohibition will also be enforced in Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) run hotels and extended to private hotels across the state, and they will be encouraged to adopt eco-friendly alternatives such as reusable glass bottles, water dispensers, and steel containers.”
The state government will also impose a fine of Rs 500 for violating the orders banning its use in the state.
The ban on use of 500 ml bottled water in plastic bottles will apply to all individuals, institutions, and commercial establishments operating in areas such as schools, offices, hotels, restaurants, dhabas, temples, banquet halls, public parks, forest areas, roads, and other public places, etc.
