( Sonam Wangchuk paying tributes at Raj ghat)

Educationist and environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk and hundreds of padyatris on a long march to Delhi from Leh, was released by the Delhi police after nearly 36 hours of detention in Delhi, on Thursday morning.

Earlier, Delhi police took him to Rajghat Wednesday. After paying his tributes at the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi, Wangchuk said, “I had urged the Prime Minister to hear our grievances and an officer from the Central government was deputed to talk to us, we also submitted a memorandum to him.”

Sonam Wangchuk had announced to call off his padyatra after the development at Rajghat.

The Delhi High Court hearing several petitions seeking release of Sonam Wangchuk and other padyatris on Thursday, Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta appearing for the Union government told the court, “Sonam Mangchuk and other padyatris were detained as prohibitory orders were in force in Delhi, which were withdrawn on October 2, and all of them released.”

The detention of Sonam Wangchuck along with people accompanying him  by the Delhi police had invited strong condemnation and criticism.  

Sonam Wangchuck had undertaken a padyatra starting from Leh on September 1 to highlight various demands of Ladakh region including inclusion of the region in the sixth schedule of the constitution, besides making people aware about the perils of global warming.
