The Lahaul – Spiti district administration has utilized services of Indian Air Force helicopters for airlifting EVM’s and other election material to remote and snowbound polling booths of the district for the parliament election in Himachal Pradesh.
Two helicopters of the Indian Air Force airlifted the EVMs and election material on Wednesday from Keylong, the district head quarter of the district. The election material to highest polling booth in the world Tashigang situated at 15256 feet in Spiti division of the district was also airlifted using the Air Force helicopter.
While the district has distinction of having Tashigang, the highest polling booth in the world, the Lingar polling booth is the smallest polling booth in Himachal Pradesh having just 37 voters. Both these polling booths are situated in Spiti division of the district.
The Lahaul – Spiti Assembly segment is part of Mandi parliamentary constituency, having 23641 voters and would go to polls on May 19 in the last phase of the voting in the parliament election in India.
Lahaul – Spiti district administration has already made arrangements for the polling in all 92 polling booths, 69 in Lahaul and 23 in Spiti division of the district. Many areas in the district are still covered under snow and the highest top the Rohtang pass situated at 13050 feet has experienced snow fall on Monday. Heavy snow at the pass is still blocking vehicular traffic on main road link to the district.
Deputy Commissioner Lahaul – Spiti Ashwani Chaudhary said , “ We have made all arrangements for polling in the district and the Boarder Roads Organization has allowed transportation of voters stuck in Manali and other areas through the Rohtang tunnel .”
