Himachal Pradesh government has dismissed the services of 11 HP Police personnel on Monday, found involved in smuggling of Chitta (heroin).
Action was taken at a meeting presided over by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu at Shimla on Monday.
A government spokesman said, “This action has been taken in line with the state government’s zero-tolerance policy against drugs, after these personnel were found to be involved in cases under the NDPS Act; the dismissals have been done under Article 311(2) (b) of the Constitution of India”.
The CM said, “The police have a primary responsibility to take strict action against the chitta and drug suppliers and if police personnel themselves were found involved in drug-related activities, such a stringent action was inevitable”.

This is a strong and commendable step by the Himachal Pradesh government. The dismissal of 11 police personnel involved in chitta smuggling sends a clear and powerful message that no one is above the law. When those entrusted with enforcing the law themselves indulge in such crimes, strict and exemplary action becomes inevitable.
However, dismissal alone should not be the end. Properties and assets acquired through drug money must also be confiscated, exactly as is done in the case of chitta smugglers. Only then will justice be complete and deterrence effective. Such decisive action will restore public trust in the system and strengthen the fight against drugs. A true zero-tolerance policy must apply equally to civilians and government employees alike.
