Rafting team at IGI Airport New Delhi before leaving for Turkey

Himachal Pradesh, which has attained many distinctions in adventure sports, has added another feather to its cap as the Indian rafting team, comprising players from Himachal Pradesh is participating for the first time in World Senior Rafting championship, being held in Tunceli in Turkey from June 8 to 13.  

The four member team headed by Colonel Neeraj Rana, Director of Atal Bihari Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports Manali has already left for Turkey to participate in the championship. Colonel Rana is also coach of the team, besides being a team member.  

The other members of the team are Panne Lal, Akshat Kumar, Naveen Kumar, and Gimnar Singh. They all have been doing river rafting in the Beas River for many years.

White water river rafting is very popular in the Beas River in Kullu valley and a large number of local people have adopted it as a profession as a large number of tourists coming to Kullu – Manali every year has been participating in this water sport.

It is for the first time river rafting team is participating in any international competition or championship outside India. The team had been trying to participate in international competitions for quite some time but was not given entry till now.

The team from Himachal Pradesh had won first position in the national rafting championship held in 2018 in the River Satluj on the basis of which the Indian team has been selected to participate in the White Water River Rafting Championship 2019, being held in Turkey.

The World Championship is being organized in the River Munzur, which would be in third level flood during the championship, making the event very adventurous.

Before leaving India, Colonel Neeraj Rana said, “Our team is very experienced and we are quite confident of achieving a place for India in the championship.” spacerun:yes’>
