The indefinite hunger strike by climate activist Sonam Wangchuk at Jantar – Mantar, New Delhi, demanding resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for paper leak and irregularities in NEET examination, entered 19th day on Thursday with the doctors attending him expressing serious concern over deterioration of his health .

Dr Satish Lamba, Senior General Physician monitoring Sonam Wangchuk’s health on Thursday said, “The activist had lost more than 9 kg after 19 days of his indefinite hunger strike and warned he has entered a critical stage and continuation of hunger strike may cause serious damage to his vital body organs.”

“After glucose reserves are exhausted the body consumes fat after which muscles get consumed and the next stage can be alarming and urges the government to intervene and save a precious gem,” Dr Lamb stated.

The health of Sonam Wangchuk is giving anxious moments to his supporters and well wishers as a large number of them have been urging him to call off his hunger strike in support of a protest by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Jantar – Mantar.

Many opposition leaders, film personalities, Kissan Union leaders among social activists have expressed solidarity with him and even appealed to end the indefinite hunger strike.

In the video message, Wangchuk (59) said, “I’m not in good shape but not so bad either; and urged his supporters, political leaders, film personalities and well wishers not to ask him to end his fast but instead join the organization’s planned “Chalo Sansad” march to Parliament on July 20, rather than asking me to break my fast, please join me on 20th July… Peaceful March to the Parliament,” he said.

Meanwhile the Delhi High Court has also ordered the administration to monitor the health of Sonam Wangchuk on a daily basis.
