At least four people were killed and over 50 others injured after a massive agitation over demands for statehood and inclusion of Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule turned violent in Leh on Wednesday.
“The Leh Police fired teargas shells and used batons after a section of demonstrators allegedly turned violent and pelted stones and torched the BJP office in Leh and later resorted to firing killing four persons” as per a PTI report.
As per a news agency’s report, the protesters claimed, “four persons were killed in police firing and more than 50 others have been injured.”
The fresh protests in Ladakh had started days after the Leh Apex Body (LAB) had started a hunger strike to achieve the demands and had vowed to continue it till their demands were met.
Acclaimed climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was part of the agitation and observing hunger strike for the past 15 days to demand statehood for Ladakh and extension of Sixth schedule to Ladakh, called off his hunger strike and the agitation after Wednesday’s happenings.
