
Impeachment notice against Allahabad High Court judge Justice Yashwant Verma was accepted by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday.
The motion of impeachment against Justice Verma signed by 146 MPs was moved in the Lok Sabha on the opening day of the monsoon session of the parliament on July 21st.
After the alleged recovery of burnt bundles of currencies notes from a room in the outhouse in the official residence of the Delhi High Court judge Justice Verma in New Delhi a few months back after the incident of a fire, the Supreme Court of India had conducted in house inquiry by three High Court judges and videos and photographs of brunt currency notes were circulated in media after the inquiry report.
The Supreme Court of India has submitted an inquiry report to the union government for taking further action in the matter.
Addressing the House, Lok Sabha Speaker Birla, announced to constitute a three-member panel to probe the allegations against Justice Varma, before discussion on the motion in the Lok Sabha.
Supreme Court judge Aravind Kumar, Madras High Court Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and jurist BV Acharya of the Karnataka High Court will probe the charges against Justice Varma.
Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs of both the ruling party and the opposition had moved impeachment motions in both houses on the opening day of the session.
The acceptance of motion by the opposition parties in Rajya Sabha by then chairman – Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar had created a political storm after which the Vice President reportedly resigned from the post citing health reasons.
