Mandi, Feb 2: At a time when mobile phones dominate entertainment and information consumption, leading to a decline in reading habits, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mandi, Apoorv Devgan, has launched a new initiative to establish dozens of libraries across the district. The effort aims to attract students and youth to libraries and revive their interest in reading.
As part of this initiative, the DC has identified various sub-divisions and locations in Mandi to systematically set up libraries under the ‘Apna Pustakalya’ scheme, launched by the state government on the initiative of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.
The district administration, in coordination with sub-divisional officers, has already begun work at several locations, while additional sites are being identified. To expedite the process, DC Devgan is personally visiting sub-divisions to oversee the progress.
State-of-the-Art Library Nearing Completion in Karsog
A state-of-the-art public library in Karsog is in its final stages of completion and will soon be accessible to readers. The facility is being developed within the premises of the mini secretariat under construction in Karsog.
The library, built at a cost of approximately Rs 20 lakh, will feature separate enclosures with a seating capacity of nearly 100 readers. A collection of 2,500 books has already been procured, with plans to increase the total to 5,000 books, including journals and newspapers.
Commitment to Expanding Public Libraries
Speaking about the initiative, DC Mandi Apoorv Devgan emphasized the importance of cultivating reading habits among the younger generation.
“Encouraging students to develop a reading habit is crucial. Under the ‘Apna Pustakalya’ scheme, the Mandi district administration is actively working to establish public libraries across the district,” Devgan said.
He further added, “The Karsog library is nearly complete and will soon be open to the public. additionally, we are setting up public libraries in Mandi, Sundernagar, Jogindernagar, Dharampur, Sandhol, and other locations. Our aim is to provide relevant books, study materials and a conducive environment for readers.”
Drawing from his personal experience, DC Devgan highlighted the role of libraries in academic success, stating: “My habit of studying in libraries played a key role in my journey to cracking the IAS examination; I strongly believe every serious student should develop this habit.”
With this initiative, the Mandi district administration aims to make libraries a central hub for learning and knowledge-sharing, ensuring reading remains an integral part of education and personal growth.
