Surender Chauhan and Uma Kaushal were unanimously elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively of Shimla Municipal Corporation on Monday.

Both were elected without a contest since the Congress has a clear majority with 24 councilors, BJP has nine councilors and CPM one, in the house of 34.

The election was held today after the oath ceremony of the newly elected councilors.

There was hectic lobbying for the posts but the final decision was taken on Sunday after a meeting of elected councilors with Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and HPCC president Pratibha Singh.

Surender Chauhan has been elected from Chhota Shimla ward while Uma Kaushal has been elected from Tutikandi ward.

The CM has congratulated the Mayor and Deputy Mayor after their election.
