Shimla Municipal Corporation has ordered the demolition of two floors of the “controversial mosque at Sanjauli”.
In an order passed by the Shimla Municipal Commissioner’s court ruled, “The remaining two floors of the Sanjauli mosque are illegal, and it has ordered the Himachal Pradesh Waqf Board and the Sanjauli Mosque Committee to demolish these floors, as the construction has been done in violation of the municipal rules and regulations.”
This decision was taken after the Waqf board failed to submit revenue records related to ownership rights of the board before the court during the hearing.
The court found that the construction violated the regulations. Earlier, on October 5, the Commissioner’s court had directed the Waqf board and Sanjauli Mosque Committee to demolish the top three floors of the five-storey mosque and submit revenue records for the remaining two floors.
The construction of additional stories in the Sanjauli mosque had led to communal tension in the area, as a few Hindu organisations had staged strong protest, terming the construction illegal.
