The Himachal Pradesh State Pollution Control Board (HPSPCB) has ordered Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam (SJPN) Shimla to pay a fine of Rs 31.17 lakh for causing water pollution in Shimla town.
The Board had conducted random sampling of water discharge from the sewage treatment plant near Shimla at Golcha and found violations of prescribed norms of water pollution several times.
The HPSPCB officials have been monitoring the water discharge of the sewage plant from the SJPN and have drawn multiple samples of the water several times.
On the basis of the report, “It was found the effluent exceeded the permissible limits for suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand, indicating the sewage discharge was not treated properly before releasing.”
Secretary of Himachal Pradesh Pollution Control Board Anil Joshi said, “We conducted random sampling of water discharge at sensitive places and had also drawn samples from the sewage treatment plant of SJPN and found wastewater was not properly treated and released in the water bodies, causing water pollution.”
As SJPN has been found violating the orders of the National Green Tribunal several times, HPSPCB has imposed a fine of Rs 31.17 lakh under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, and the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
