Himachal Pradesh Assembly, on the opening day of the monsoon session of Vidhan Sabha on Tuesday, amended the law to raise the marriageable age of girls in Himachal from 18 to 21 years.
Health Minister Dhani Ram Shandi introduced the bill and emphasized the government’s dedication to providing girls better education and career growth opportunities.
He said , “ “Raising the marriageable age will ensure the girls are given the chance to fully develop and achieve their potential before entering into marriage, as early marriages often result in negative health outcomes for young mothers and restrict their personal and professional development,” he added .
The amendment is in line with the Central government’s decision to raise the legal marriage age for girls to 21 years.
Earlier, the monsoon session of HP Vidhan Sabha began with a noisy scene as opposition BJP demanded adjournment of routine house business to discuss worsening law and order situation in the state.
The Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur moved an adjournment motion under Rule 67, highlighting recent incidents of few law and order related issues in the state, Thakur pointed to a violent clash in Baddi, where two individuals were critically injured and assaulted and an incident in Palampur etc.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu in his reply said, “The government had taken strong action against criminal elements, including drug dealers involved in the Baddi clash and questioned the Opposition’s motives in demanding adjournment; he reiterated his government’s firm commitment to deal strictly with drug mafia.”
