Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has welcomed the Supreme Court of India’s decision of granting stay on conviction of former AICC president and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case by a court in Gujarat.
Rahul Gandhi was convicted for two years by a court in Gujarat in a defamation case filed by a former minister of Gujarat, as a corollary of which Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from the membership of Lok Sabha and removed as a MP, elected from Waynad parliament seat in Kerala.
The lower court, a district court and Gujarat High Court had earlier declined to stay Rahul Gandhi’s conviction and dismissed his appeals after which he had moved the Supreme Court of India.
The Supreme Court of India’s decision of granting stay on his conviction would also make him eligible for restitution of his Lok Sabha membership.
Hailing the Supreme Court order, the CM said, “While this order has reaffirmed faith in the judiciary this would also strengthen the Indian Democracy.”
