The Opposition INDIA bloc has named former Supreme Court judge Justice B Sudershan Reddy as its candidate for the upcoming Vice-Presidential election against NDA candidate CP Radhakrishnan, the current Governor of Maharashtra.
The decision was announced to the media persons at New Delhi on Tuesday jointly by parties representing the INDIA block.
Addressing the media persons Congress president Malikarjun Kharge said, “This vice-presidential contest is an ideological battle, and all the opposition parties agreed on this, and this is the reason we have nominated B Sudershan Reddy as the joint candidate”; the AAP which is not part of INDIA block has also reportedly supported his candidature.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge praised Justice Reddy as one of India’s most distinguished and progressive jurists with an eminent legal career. “He has been a consistent and courageous champion of social, economic, and political justice,” said Mr. Kharge, hailing him as someone who favored the poor and protected the Constitution and fundamental rights.
The election for the post of Vice President will be held on September 9 and the date of filing the nominations is August 21.
