The Himachal Pradesh government has directed all health institutions in the state to closely monitor influenza cases following the recent detection of two Human Metapneumovirus (HMVP) cases in Karnataka.

The Secretary of Health issued these directions during a virtual review meeting on Monday, attended by Chief Medical Officers, Medical Superintendents, and Principals of Medical Colleges. The meeting was held in response to a recent consultation led by the Union Health Secretary in Delhi with Health Secretaries from all states and union territories.

Reports indicate that several cities in China have been experiencing cases of HMPV for some time now.

The Union Health Secretary reassured the public, stating:
“HMPV is a common virus, and there is no need for alarm. It primarily affects children, adults, and individuals with low immunity. While cases have been reported in India previously, it does not pose a serious threat.”

He outlined the symptoms of HMP, which include:

  • Cough
  • Nasal congestion
  • Fever
  • Difficulty in breathing in severe cases

The virus spreads through close contact, such as shaking hands or sneezing. The public has been advised to take proper precautions, including hygiene measures and seeking timely medical attention if symptoms appear.
