The Delhi Police detained several activists who had come to observe a fast on Sunday in solidarity with climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on hunger strike since October 6 at Ladakh Bhawan.

Sonam Wangchuk and his supporters had gone on hunger strike to press their demand of meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to raise various issues including inclusion of Ladakh in the sixth schedule of the constitution.

The Ramon Magsaysay Award winner climate activist Sonam Wangchuk had walked a distance of about a thousand kilometer starting from Leh on September 1 and was scheduled to pay tributes at Rajghat on October 2 but was detained by the Delhi Police and was later taken by the Police to Rajghat.

According to one of the protesters, the detainees have been taken to the Mandir Marg police station.

The Police said, “We have detained some students from outside the Ladakh Bhawan but Sonam Wangchuk is not among them,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Devesh Mahla said.

In a video message Wangchuk said, “Many people came here today to observe a silent protest. It is really sad that they were detained by Delhi Police, It is sad because in world’s largest democracy, we can’t even hold a silent protest,”

Supporters of Sonam Wangchuk held a massive protest in Leh to oppose detention of people from Ladakh Bhawan. His supporters observed a day long fast on Sunday at several places to express solidarity with Wangchuk.

Wangchuk Deliberately took two issues, one is with save fragile Himalayas from changing climate and second one is inclusion of Ladakh in the sixth schedule of the constitution which has political motives. When any movement with political motive, never suits to other political parties, therefore, climate change issue is totally under shadow by political motive.
