Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh was given an emotional send-off as thousands, including President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several Chief Ministers, senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, foreign dignitaries and a large number of Congress supporters paid him floral tributes before his funeral.
President Dropadi Murmu, PM Narendra Modi, Chief Ministers from Congress-ruled states, Union Ministers and other dignitaries visited Dr. Singh’s residence to pay their respects to the two-times Prime Minister.
On Saturday morning, his body was placed at the Congress headquarters, where thousands of party workers and supporters offered floral tributes.
Dr. Singh’s family, accompanied by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, escorted his body from the Congress office to Nigambodh Ghat cremation grounds on the banks of the Yamuna River. Political figures from across party lines joined them at the cremation.
Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck was among the foreign dignitaries who attended the funeral.
Dr. Singh’s eldest daughter, Upinder Singh, a noted historian, lit the funeral pyre.
Dr. Manmohan Singh, who served as India’s Prime Minister for two consecutive terms from 2004 to 2014, passed away at the age of 92 on Thursday at AIIMS, New Delhi.
