( Padyatris detained in Delhi last night)

While detention of Educationist and Environment activist Sonam Wangchu and hundreds of yatris on march to Delhi from Leh, by Delhi Police on Monday night at Delhi border, has been widely condemned, People’s Movement for 6th Schedule of Ladakh has given a call for Ladakh bandh on Tuesday.

Sonam Wangchu and hundreds of yatris accompanying him were detained by Delhi Police last night on the Delhi border and were taken to different police stations.

Wangchu along with his hundreds of yatris has launched a long march to Delhi, beginning from Leh on September 1 and was to conclude the yatra at Rajghat on the Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, walking a distance of nearly 1000 kms.

The yatris are highlighting problems of the Ladakh region and demanding inclusion of Ladakh in 6th schedule. More importantly Wangchu is raising the issue of saving the Himalayan culture and environment, besides making people aware about the impending danger of Global Warming.

It said, “The ruling dispensation and Delhi Police’s unjust detention and prevention of yatris from entering Delhi is undemocratic action towards people of Ladakh and we strongly condemn and extend overwhelming support to the bandh call.”

The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has strongly condemned the detention of Sonam Wangchu and other yatris. In a message on X Gandhi said “The detention of Sonam Wangchu and hundreds of Ladakhi’s peacefully marching for environmental and constitutional rights is unacceptable.”
