The President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu presented Gold Medals to 10 meritorious students including seven girls, during the 26th Annual Convocation of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) Shimla. As many as 99 Students were awarded Ph. D. degrees, including 59 females, besides giving Gold Medals to 111 meritorious students.
Addressing the audience on the occasion the President said , “ The HP University has played an important role in education since its inception in 1970 and the alumni of the University have left their mark in various fields like arts, medical, judiciary, sports, social service, politics and administration”.
She said,” The climate of Himachal Pradesh and rich flora and fauna of the Himalayan region attracts a large number of people from the world; since climate change is affecting the ecology of this region it is need of the hour to move forward towards sustainable development goals while conserving its rich natural heritage, becoming duty of the HPU to promote research and innovation keeping this in mind the needs of the local community and the ecological challenges.”
The President said, “It is the fundamental duty of every citizen to develop scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of inquiry and reform and exhorted graduating students to link their individual goals with the national goals.”
She said, “The youths of our country are making a mark across the world with their talent and many of them have established start-ups and set great examples of success, innovation being the key element of these start-ups and expressed her happiness on the new initiatives being taken by the HPU.”
While congratulating all the degree holders and gold medalists, Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla, who is also a Chancellor of the University, said that it is a matter of pride for all of us that this convocation is being organized in the august presence of the President, Smt. Droupadi Murmu.
Congratulating the University authorities, the Governor said that it is a matter of great pride that the National Assessment and Accreditation Council have once again granted ‘A’ grade accreditation to this University.
Expressing concern over the illegal trade of drugs in Himachal Pradesh, the Governor said, “There is an urgent need to launch a mass movement against the menace.”
Speaking on the occasion Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu congratulated the students for their achievements and said, “ Since the HPU is my alma mater I have many memories’ related to my student life here and lauded the university for bringing laurels to the state in different fields .”

Emphasizing the importance of honesty in life, the CM said, “The honesty is key to success.”
Earlier, the President was honoured by the Governor and CM by presenting a Himachali cap and memento.
The President also attended the Interactive Programme with IA&AS Officers Trainees organized by the National Academy of Audit & Accounts, Shimla.
Addressing the trainees, the President said, “It is a matter of pride for all of them for the opportunity they have got to enforce principles of accountability and transparency, as officers of the Comptroller and Auditor General and the Indian Audit and Accounts Department and they should continue to uphold the ideals of the Constitution and work with integrity and commitment towards Nation building”.
