Himachal Pradesh government has appointed Dr Surender Kashyap, former Principal of Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) Shimla, as the first Vice Chancellor of Atal Medical Research University.
The notification of appointment of Dr Kashyap was issued by the Governor’s office on Monday.
The state government has already notified to set up first Medical Research University of the state at Ner Chowk in the campus of Shri Lal Bahadur Shashtri Medical College, in Mandi district, which has been named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Prof. Surender Kashyap, MD in medicine is former Principal of IGMC Shimla, Dean of Medical Sciences of Himachal Pradesh University and presently working as Director of Kalpna Chawla Medical College Karnal.
Dr Kashyap is a pulmonary medicine specialist and has done extensive research in lung cancer and is a recipient of International Travel Award for his work on lung cancer.
Born in Bhalawag village near Chail in Solan district, Dr Kashyap did his schooling from government high school Chail, MBBS from IGMC Shimla and M D from PGI Chandigarh.
Dr. Kashyap is a fellow of several national and international societies and member of number of organizations. He has been bestowed with several honors and awards including Life Time Achievement Award and Reverent Teacher award.
Dr. Kashyap has also worked as fellow at Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa, Florida, USA and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA.
