After reduction of excise duty on petrol and diesel by the Central government, Himachal Pradesh government has also reduced Value Added Tax (VAT) on these products to bring the prices down and give relief to common man.

The Central government had reduced the excise duty on petrol by Rs 5 per liter and Rs 10 per liter on diesel.

While Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur had welcomed the decision, taking cue the state government has reduced the VAT on Petrol by Rs 2 liter and Rs 4.60 liter on diesel.

As per the notification issued by the state government the VAT on petrol has been reduced from Rs 15.50 per liter to Rs 13.50 per liter and on diesel from Rs 9 per to Rs 4.40 per liter.

Both these decisions have been taken to give relief to common people affected by skyrocketing prices of petrol and diesel.

While people are annoyed with the government for the continuous increase in petrol and diesel prices, voters of the state have also expressed their resentment in recently concluded by- elections in three Assembly and Mandi parliamentary constituencies by largely voting against the ruling BJP, resulting in defeat of the candidates fielded by BJP.

  1. This is only a face saving excercise after defeat in bi polls. People has rejected the ruling BJP on the issue of unprecedented sky-rocketed price rise in the State.

  2. The move by the centre and the state governments cannot be termed as ‘relief’ to the people. A reasonable step should be taken to revert to 2014 tax rates.
