IIT Mandi has made tremendous progress in every field during its decade long journey after its inception in 2009 and would strive to achieve a world ranking in next five to ten years said the Director of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi, Prof. Timothy Gonsalves.
Replying to a question while interacting with media persons at IIT campus on completion of ten years of the IIT, Prof. Gonsalves said, “When IIT Mandi was started at Kamand we had 87 students and one Director but with 105 faculty members, strong group of researchers and research laboratories today the IIT would strive for a world ranking in next five to ten year.”
He said , “Since its inception in 2009 the IIT Mandi has achieved many firsts and pioneering initiatives in engineering education, research and development (R&D), international collaborations and has been able to benefit society with its work.”
On being asked how the researchers of the IIT would get feed back on problems of the society, especially of hill people to give them solutions, IIT Director said, “We have started interaction with different sections of the society through PRAYAS and the students of the institute are touring different areas to know the problems in order to suggest solutions.”
Prof. Gonsalves said , “In 2010 IIT Mandi adopted a strategy of working on research directed towards solving major challenges of India especially the Himalayan region by crafting a unique project-based learning approach and a collaborative inter-disciplinary culture which enabled our talented faculty and students to crack challenging societal and academic problems.”
“In the last decade IIT Mandi has developed state-of-the-art infrastructure with a built-up area of 1.40 lakh sq.mt comprising of housing for more than 1600 students, 125 faculty and 61 staff members, cutting-edge laboratories, libraries, sports facilities and extra-curricular activities, besides a modern auditorium,” he added.
He said, “As many as 1655 students including 750 B. Tech., 179 M.Sc., 257 M.Tech, 24 M.A, 361 Ph.D., 66 M.S. and 18 i -Ph. Ds are hosted in the institute at present and have admitted 20.22 percent girl students in B Tech courses.”
The Director said , “IIT Mandi has been ranked no 1 among the engineering colleges in the state and no 20 in over all ranking in the country, and unique practicum learning curriculum in the. B. Tech. programme of IIT Mandi has been designed taking into consideration the current and future changes in the society and the nature of technology, besides signing 10 MOUs with foreign institutions for exchange of knowledge.”
